About Stephanie
I was born and raised in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. In my early 20’s, after giving up some destructive habits, I had extra time and energy on my hands, and decided to pursue yoga, something I’d been curious about for a long time. This decision led me to my first yoga class at Unity Woods Yoga Center.
I remember so clearly the feeling I had after that first class. I was walking over Duke Ellington Bridge in DC at dusk. I had never before in my life experienced such peace or such a sense of belonging to the world as a whole. Physically, too, I felt different. I could feel that my jaw had unclenched and my back had released.
I quickly became immersed in the practice. I established a daily practice almost immediately. Yoga became my path. It has helped me physically recover from back pain. I’ve also found the practice useful to relieve anxiety, depression, and craving for addictions. As my practice has deepened and broadened, I find yoga gives a wonderful structure for a life long spiritual practice—a path of discovery, change and acceptance.
After realizing that this was my path, I began a two-year teaching apprenticeship with John Schumacher, who was my primary teacher for nine years. I began teaching in 2001 and became certified at the Introductory level in 2006. I have taught many populations, including children, teenagers, adults and senior adults.
In 2006, I moved to Maine after dreaming of coming here for many years. I now study occasionally with Patricia Walden and Peentz Dubble, both in Boston, MA. In the spring of 2007, I had the opportunity to study with Geeta Iyengar. I hope to introduce students to yoga and help you find a way to establish your own yoga practice in time.
